Shopify says agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. Its Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout is still in early access, so availability varies by store.
Once it is enabled, a customer can discover a product and finish the purchase inside an AI conversation. They may never see your normal product page or checkout. Shopify Catalog or Google Merchant Center supplies the facts that carry the sale.
Most ecommerce teams still treat the product feed as advertising infrastructure. Agentic checkout makes it part of order operations. A stale price, missing variant, incomplete return policy, or unsupported checkout feature can stop the order before your storefront has a chance to help.
Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, supports direct buying in AI Mode and Gemini. The merchant remains the merchant of record, which means payment, fulfillment, support, returns, and the customer relationship still land with the store.
For native checkout, Google documents three core session endpoints: create, update, and complete. The implementation also needs Merchant Center preparation, Google Pay, an approved UCP profile, and order-status syncing.
Shopify handles more of that plumbing for eligible stores, but the store's product and policy data still has to qualify. Shopify Catalog supplies titles, descriptions, options, images, prices, and availability. Custom fields can come from metafields and metaobjects when the catalog mapping is configured.
Before you enable it, try to answer one question: can an outside system understand the product, quote the right terms, accept the order, and hand it back to your team cleanly?
Open Sales channels > Agentic in Shopify. Record which channels can access the catalog, whether direct checkout is active, and who owns the decision.
Pay close attention to the Allow Shopify to manage for me setting. Shopify says this option can activate available channels, supported direct checkout, and future agentic channels as they launch. If your team needs a deliberate launch review, switch to manual management and document the approval owner.
Also record any deactivation. Shopify says catalog access can take up to seven days to stop after it is turned off. Plan for that delay instead of treating the admin toggle as an immediate kill switch.
Start with Merchant Center account health and free-listing approval. For Google UCP, the native_commerce product attribute controls checkout eligibility. A missing or false value makes the product ineligible.
Then flag product types that the channel does not support. Google's current exclusions include subscriptions, installments, personalized products, final-sale products, preorders, products with special shipping, age-restricted goods, services, rentals, and virtual items. Shopify's Google integration also excludes bundles, customizable products, B2B products, local delivery, and pickup in direct checkout.
Export the catalog and give every SKU one of three statuses: eligible, excluded, or needs review. Report the count and revenue contribution in each group. A general claim that the store is "AI ready" gives the launch owner very little to work with.
Check title, description, category, options, variant names, images, price, availability, identifiers, and any required legal notice. Sample the highest-volume products first, then review products with custom metafields or complex variants.
Compare Shopify Catalog with Merchant Center. Product IDs, price, availability, and policy terms should agree across both systems. Shopify says relevant legal disclosures must appear within the first 6,000 characters of a product description for Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout.
Check whether each field answers a purchase question. An agent needs a clear response to "Will this fit a 15-inch laptop?" or "Is this compatible with model X?" A polished lifestyle paragraph cannot make up for a missing size, material, compatibility, or included-parts field.
Google requires a return cost, return window, full-policy link, and at least one customer-support method in the merchant data used for UCP.
Compare those fields with the live store, Merchant Center, help desk macros, and warehouse rules. Check a few real combinations by destination, order value, product type, and shipping method. Free-shipping thresholds, regional restrictions, and return exceptions are common places for systems to disagree.
Put an operations owner on this section. The growth team can turn on a channel, but support and fulfillment inherit the promises it makes.
Shopify says some checkout blocks, custom pixels, and client-side analytics do not run in its Google-powered direct checkout. Bundles, subscriptions, customizable products, local delivery, and pickup also have limits.
Build a short dependency table for the normal checkout. Include upsells, loyalty redemption, gift messages, consent fields, fraud tools, delivery selection, subscription logic, address validation, and tracking scripts. For each item, decide whether the direct-checkout path supports it, safely skips it, or makes the product ineligible.
A catalog review will not catch every one of these dependencies. The product may be eligible while the expected checkout behavior is missing.
Place a test order when the channel and account allow it. Confirm the channel attribution, order data, tax, shipping charge, discount, customer record, fulfillment routing, cancellation path, return path, and support context.
Review measurement separately. Shopify says server-to-server checkout-started and checkout-completed pixels fire for this Google flow, while custom pixels and client-side analytics are unsupported. Compare the order in Shopify with the events in your analytics and ad platforms before using conversion reporting to judge the channel.
For a direct UCP implementation, add order-status syncing to the test plan. Google needs current fulfillment and order states, while the merchant still owns the post-purchase experience.
Run the audit now if Agentic appears in your Shopify admin, your team is preparing a Google UCP integration, or the catalog contains custom data and complex checkout behavior.
Move more carefully if most revenue comes from subscriptions, bundles, personalized goods, B2B, or local fulfillment. Current direct-checkout support is limited for those models.
There is also no credible public benchmark for adoption, conversion rate, or revenue impact yet. Use the audit to prevent operational mistakes and learn what portion of the catalog can participate. Keep the revenue forecast conservative until your own orders provide evidence.
Agentic checkout moves a part of the customer journey into systems your storefront does not control. The merchant still owns the promise and the cleanup.
That makes product data, policy data, checkout dependencies, and order syncing launch criteria. Audit those pieces before direct checkout turns on, then test the path with the same care you would give a new payment method.
